When she was a child, Keller received a letter from a writer that she quoted in her autobiography: "Some day you will write a great story out of your own head, that will be a comfort and help to many." This statement proved prophetic, as her autobiography The Story of My Life, published in the United States in 1903, is still read today for its ability to motivate and reassure readers. Keller has become, in American culture, an icon of perseverance, respected and honored by readers, historians, and activists. ![]() Helen Keller overcame the seemingly insurmountable obstacles of deafness and blindness to become an influential lecturer and social activist. ![]() ![]() OPINION: The strength of this book is the relationship between Henry and Adelaide. When Adelaide and Henry find themselves on opposite sides of stopping a wedding, the two take a journey across England, both thwarting and tantalizing one another. In her latest quest to help a young woman, Adelaide encounters Henry, Duke of Clayborn, who has tried to live the role of a duke to perfection. Adelaide has another secret she was not born to the aristocracy but rather is the daughter of a crime lord. THE STORY: Adelaide Frampton spends her time in ballrooms watching as she pretends to be a wallflower, but she is actually the Matchbreaker who helps women avoid the altar. Much of the book is a road trip between them (only one bed at the inn!), so their relationship shines. ![]() ![]() I enjoyed the relationship between Adelaide and Henry. ![]() Heartbreaker (Hell's Belles, #2) by Sarah MacLeanįINAL DECISION: Much better than the first in the series. ![]() ![]() ![]() I loved Harry Potter as much as when I was younger, and so does everyone else, it is one of the best books of all time. I was so happy to find Harry's character once again, and to meet Ron and Hermione out of the movie screen. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is the first adventure of Harry in the world of magic. And when I did manage to get the time to start reading them again, I was so glad that I chose to do so, it was just great once again. But I have never had enough time in-between all the other great young adult books coming out, which are all as great as the last. I've been meaning to re-read the Harry Potter series again for so long, ever since the last Deathly Hallows movie came out. ![]() Anyone who doesn't like Harry Potter should be frowned upon, because what's not to love? ![]() From that it grew into a blockbuster movie series with eight movies, the last book split into two parts. It started off with simple stories at bedtime that grew to a whole series containing seven books. The Montreal-based author/illustrator is the force behind the wonderful non-fiction Disgusting Creatures series, as well as the terrifically fun picture books I Want a Monster! and The Cranky Ballerina. I have spoken/written about my love of Elise Gravel‘s work a few times before. ![]() Olga and the Smelly Thing From Nowhere by Elise Gravel ![]() These are ones I’ve recently read, enjoyed tremendously and would recommend: In a roundabout way, I guess what I’m trying to say is: graphic novels for children (and all-ages) rock and definitely count as reading. It breaks my heart if I hear an adult- or heaven forbid, a teacher- say they don’t ‘count’ graphic novels as reading. I cannot even count the number of times I’ve had a caregiver or self-described reluctant reader come ask me for reader’s advisory help and graphic novels (or comics) have been a huge (HUGE) ray of hope for both kid and adult. ![]() Admittedly, there are indeed a number of book genres that I love- but children’s graphic novels hold a special spot in my reader’s and librarian’s heart. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Their erasure from trans history masks the profound ways race has figured prominently in the construction and representation of transgender subjects.
